1794 S-39 Head of 1794 Cent, AU55
The Finest S-39
Historic Provenance

1794 1C S-39 R6 Head of 1794 AU55 PCGS. CAC Approved. Frosty golden tan and light brown blending to light chocolate in protected areas. Sharply struck with light wear on the highpoints and great eye appeal. Just a few minor marks including a tiny planchet chip on the bust, a couple faint hairline scratches from the dentils off the chin, a small nick high on the cheek left of the eye, and a tiny nick on the rim over the E in STATES. Although this is the plate coin for Heck state 1, this is his state 2 (also Breen state II), with a fine die crack up from a dentil left of the denominator and a horizontal die line over the ear bending towards the corner of the eye. Graded AU50 net EF45 and CC#2 behind the ANS example in the Noyes census, his photo #39969. Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#2 honors behind the ANS coin. This cataloger's EAC grade is EF45. This cent is plated in the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference, the 1910 Gilbert-Elder reprint, and the 1923 Chapman reference. The reverse is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. A great cent with a long provenance and a wonderful history. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35582.55/13457904).

The Bushnell Collection was one of the most celebrated cabinets of 19th-century American numismatics, and its copper holdings were foundational. Bushnell had gathered a near-complete run of large and half cents, beginning with 1793 issues in unusually fine states of preservation. Highlights included Chain and Wreath cents of the highest rarity, Liberty Caps of 1793-1796, and an extraordinary selection of 1794 varieties, many of which were illustrated on the phototype plates. The catalogers noted that Bushnell spared no expense in upgrading his coins, and that the quality across the early cents and half cents was consistently exceptional.
Later early dates (1797-1807) featured rare varieties, while the half cents included key pieces. Middle and late date cents were also present, many in uncirculated or proof condition, ensuring completeness across the copper series. The Bushnell Collection became a benchmark for future copper specialists, not only for the rarity of its contents but also for the quality and thoroughness of the Chapman brothers' cataloguing. Its dispersal marked one of the great turning points in the public availability of early American copper coins.
