Ex Quality Coins (Baltimore, MD) 11/14/1998-COL Steven K. Ellsworth.

The celebrated Matthew A. Stickney Collection, sold in June 1907, was one of the greatest auctions of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and copper coins were a vital element. Stickney's cents began with extraordinary 1793 issues-Chain, Wreath, and Liberty Cap varieties-in preservation that set new standards. The sale also featured unique and extremely rare colonial and state coppers, including the 1776 "Janus Head" penny, alongside the famous Brasher Doubloon and other rarities. His large cents of 1794-1796 and early 1800s included exceptional examples, many illustrated on plates.

Half cents included important pieces from 1793 and 1796, as well as a proof 1796 with pole, praised as one of the great gems of the sale. Middle and later dates were also present, ensuring completeness across the copper series. While the 1804 dollar and pioneer gold captured headlines, copper specialists recognized Stickney's cabinet as a touchstone of early American numismatics, notable for both rarity and condition.
