Description

1794 S-53 Head of 1794 Cent, AU50
The Chapman Plate Coin

1794 1C S-53 R6 Head of 1794 AU50 PCGS. Choice uniform glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth, the color is beautiful, and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. The only defects are two tiny pit-like planchet flakes or voids under the 9 and a larger struck-through void in the field under the lowest curl, both apparently as struck. The cause of these marks is debatable and they do catch your eye. Otherwise this cent is about as perfect as a delicately-used 1794 cent could be. LDS, Breen state I, Heck state 2, with die clashmarks on the obverse. In addition there appears to be a very fine die crack from the back of the head into the cap just above a die clashmark. Graded EF40 net VF35 and second finest in the Noyes census, his photo #20012. Bland says EF40 and second finest with the #3 coin a distant 15 points behind this one. The slightly finer CC#1 coin in both census lists is impounded in the ANS Collection, and the CC#4 example (net F15) is in the Carnegie Museum, so the available supply of nice examples of this very rare variety is quite limited. This cataloger's EAC grade is VF35+. Both sides of this cent are plated in the 1923 Chapman reference on 1794 cents. Reported to be the discovery coin for the variety; Henry Chapman was given discovery credit in 1897. A superior example of this very rare variety, and it comes with a great provenance. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35621.50/40347215).

The Henry C. Miller Collection, sold by Thomas L. Elder in April 1917, was renowned for its extraordinary completeness and preservation of cents and half cents. The catalog emphasized that Miller's runs of 1794 and 1796 cents were among the most complete and finest in existence, with hundreds of die varieties represented. A gem 1793 Wreath cent, called the finest known, stood out, as did a partly red 1796 half cent with pole, both described as gems worthy of record prices. Elder predicted-and realized-significant price advances in this offering, which rivaled and even surpassed the Mougey sale of 1910 in copper strength.

The collection extended through all series of early, middle, and late date large and half cents, with many coins in mint state or proof. Elder noted the steady rise in values for early copper and positioned the Miller Collection as a benchmark event for both rarity and preservation. The Miller catalog, richly detailed and including plates, remains a cornerstone reference for copper specialists.
