Description
Legendary Starred Reverse 1794 Cent
S-48, Collectible Fair 2 Grade
1794 1C Starred Reverse Fair 2 PCGS. S-48, B-38, R.5. Among
the most famous of all Sheldon varieties, S-48 is the "Starred
Reverse" with 94 tiny stars entered near the dentils. The purpose
behind these stars is unknown, and it may just have been "an idle
hour at the Mint" one day in 1794. Some 70 examples are known, and
the number of early copper collectors seeking specimens is
substantially higher. This example has surprising obverse detail,
including a clear date and LIBERTY. The reverse is heavily worn,
but several stars are plainly visible (with magnification) between
6 and 8 o'clock. EAC 3.(Registry values: P1)Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 1374, GSID# 720)
