Highly Prized 1794 Starred Reverse Cent
1794 1C Starred Reverse VF Details NCS. VG7 EAC. S-48, Die State I, R.5. When coin collectors say Starred Reverse, only one image comes to mind. This rare variety is one of the most well-known of all large cent varieties among collectors who do not specialize in large cents. Of course, to the large cent aficionado, this is a variety of immense popularity and extreme desire. In Penny Whimsy, Dr. Sheldon stated that "collectors mention it [the Starred Reverse] with religious awe." Now that the E and L counterstamped quarter mystery has been solved, the next numismatic mystery is the exact reason for the stars on the reverse of this variety. Sheldon stated "they are put in with a light punch, and since they are far too light to have been intended as a border, it is perhaps more likely that they are the result of the whim of an idle hour at the Mint." Obviously, the 94 stars are connected to the year of the coin, but their purpose has yet to be solved. Some have suggested they were an anti-counterfeiting measure.This is one of the more recently discovered examples of this variety. The obverse has light brown and lighter tan color intermingled with deep maroon patina. Some dark green verdigris at the top of the obverse may be removable with proper conservation. Some minor corrosion is present. The reverse is quite similar with a few minor pits or voids. The central design is rather ill-defined, however, the all important border and stars are completely visible, except for a tiny rim bruise at 4 o'clock. This is a highly desirable example that is sure to garner numerous bids, but only one will be successful. Why not make that your bid? NCS Damaged.
