Description

Popular 1794 S-48 Starred Reverse Cent, VG8

1794 1C Starred Reverse VG8 PCGS. S-48, B-38, R.5. There are only a few coins that can be identified without mentioning their date. The Starred Reverse is one of those coins. It gets its name from the 94 tiny stars sprinkled around the border of the reverse die. This example provides some grading challenges, as do most Starred Reverse cents. The reverse is much lower grade than the obverse.
In our opinion, the obverse has the sharpness of VG10, with a number of minor scratches and other marks. The reverse has the sharpness of Fair 2, also with a number of faint scratches. We consider the net grade to be Good 6 obverse, Fair 2 reverse, or Good 4 overall. With careful study, a little over half of the stars can be seen. MRB Good 4.(Registry values: P1)
