Description

1794 HEAD OF 1794 CENT, MS64 BROWN
SUPERB SHELDON-28

1794 S-28 R2 MS64 Brown PCGS. Lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate with hints of faded mint color along the left edge of the cap. The surfaces are satiny, the strike is very sharp, and this cent has fabulous eye appeal. The best identifying marks are a pair of small spots of slightly darker brown toning in the field off the chin plus a few small puffs of reddish brown toning at the denominator and RICA. MDS, Heck die state 6, Breen state VI, with fine die cracks on the obverse and die clashmarks on the reverse. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and CC#3, his photo #25248. This cataloger's EAC grade is MS60. A choice, very attractive 1794 cent. (Note: The provenance shown for this cent in the Breen encyclopedia is incorrect. This is not the coin that was sold by Doug Bird to Chris McCawley in 1/1995. That was a slightly lower grade piece.) The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 66 35549.64/37128542.
Discovered unattributed in a date set by Dennis E. Steinmetz (Steinmetz Coins & Currency) 10/5/1989-Douglas F. Bird Collection, Goldbergs 2/16/2020:11-Walter J. Husak Collection.
