1794 HEAD OF 1794 CENT, MS65+ BROWN
THE FINEST GRADED S-29

1794 S-29 R2 MS65+ Brown PCGS, CAC Approved. Choice lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with traces of faded mint red showing outside the wreath. Both sides are covered with unbroken satiny mint frost and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The surfaces are nearly flawless. The best identifying marks are a tiny nick between the bases of the 1 & 7 in the date, a small spot of slightly darker toning low on the cap, another spot midway between the second S in STATES and the O in OF, and a tiny hairline under the E in ONE. M-LDS, Heck die state 3, Breen state III, with a fine die crack from the dentils through the R in AMERICA, myriad fine die cracks in the obverse fields, and clear die clashmarks inside the wreath at ON and CE. Another beautiful 1794 cent in this outstanding collection. The obverse is plated to illustrate the die in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy, and the reverse is plated in the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference on the cents of 1794. Both sides are illustrated in the Breen Encyclopedia and in the 1923 Chapman reference on the cents of 1794. Called MS62 Choice and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo # 22675. Bland says MS60 as well but tied for CC#3 behind two unconfirmed examples in his list. This cataloger's EAC grade is MS63. A very significant cent that comes with a long provenance that includes many highly distinguished numismatists. The attribution and Gerrie Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. 35552.65+/26772320.

Paul H. Gerrie, Jr.,
who was born in 1944, operated a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania consulting business, Questa Petroleum. He developed a strong interest in fine wine during his business travel, and pursued that interest with the purchase of a vineyard in McMinnville, Oregon in 1992. He began collecting Lincoln cents in the mid-1950s, and eventually migrated to large cents. He formed an exceptional collection of high-quality early cents with a focus on 1794 cent varieties.
