Description

1794 HEAD OF 1794 CENT, VF35
SHARP S-36
EX GASKILL-PASCHAL-BROWN

1794 S-36 R5 VF35 PCGS. Frosty dark olive brown and steel. The surfaces are satiny, the details are sharp, and this cent is impressive in spite of the dark toning. There are hints of microscopic verdigris in some of the protected areas, and the only notable marks are a thin nick in the field right of the Y in LIBERTY and a very tiny planchet flake at a dentil tip just right of the end of the pole (as struck). Sharply struck M-LDS, Heck die state 2, Breen state III, with light die clashmarks on both sides. Graded VF25 and tied for CC#5 honors in the Bland census. Noyes says net VF20 and CC#7, his photo #25269. This cataloger's EAC grade is VF25. A nice example of a rare die variety. And it comes with an impressive provenance. Previously removed from an NGC slab graded XF45 (NGC label #508569-001, and the label showed the attribution and Rasmussen provenance). The attribution and Trollan-Husak Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 40, 2 in 55. 35573.35/36048765.

Robinson S. Brown, Jr.
, a well-known figure in the history of large cent collecting, assembled a complete collection of Sheldon numbered varieties on two different occasions. He was born in 1917 and spent five decades with Brown-Forman Distillers of Louisville, Kentucky, famous for Jack Daniel's whisky. He retired as chairman of the board in 1982. Superior sold his first collection of large cents (1793-1857) in 1986 and his second collection (1793-1839) a decade later. The third Superior sale of coins from the Brown collection consisted of only late-date cents, auctioned in 2002. Brown died on July 28, 2005.
