1794 HEAD OF 1794 CENT, AU50
BEAUTIFUL CONDITION CENSUS S-39
1794 S-39 R6 AU50 PCGS. Choice glossy brown and light
chocolate. Sharpness close to EF40 but there are some small,
shallow planchet chips (as struck) near the dentils on the lower
two-thirds of the obverse. The only contact marks are a couple tiny
ticks on the neck and a very light rim bruise over the T in
LIBERTY. None of these defects is significant and the eye appeal of
this cent is excellent. The reverse is choice. MDS, Heck die state
3, Breen state II, with an arcing die crack at UN but no swelling
in the center of the reverse. Bland calls this piece EF40 and tied
for CC#2. Noyes says VF35 and third finest, his photo #20086. This
cataloger's EAC grade is VF35. The finest known piece is impounded
in the ANS Museum which leaves only one other example equal (or
slightly finer depending on the census list used) to the piece
offered here. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution is
noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in

Denis W. Loring was born May 28, 1947, in Flushing, New York. He is a graduate of Harvard and M.I.T. and worked in the insurance business as an actuary. A charter member of Early American Coppers, he is an active contributor to the club, serving as EAC secretary from 1972 to 1978, and again from 1981 to 2005, as vice president from 2005 to 2009, and as president from 2009 to 2011. He discovered the 1796 NC-6 variety. In 1974 Loring completed a collection of Sheldon-numbered varieties, the fifth person to accomplish such a collection. He was chairman of the EAC Revision Committee, working on a revision of Penny Whimsy during the early 1970s. Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia incorporated much of that work.
