A Newark, New Jersey native born in 1856, Henry Clay Hines studied law at Columbia University and was admitted to the bar in 1883, eventually giving up his law practice in favor of manufacturing men's clothing. He was involved in politics, but it was said his honesty was his undoing in that field. Hines was highly successful as a large cent aficionado whose expertise supported Clapp and Newcomb in their studies. He experienced a severe financial reversal during the 1929 stock market crash although continued to collect large cents. Hines died in 1946.
From The Collections of Walter J. Husak and The Liberty Cap Foundation.
