A physician and psychologist with the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, Dr. William H. Sheldon developed an interest in large cents at a young age while working for the Chapman brothers. He was the author of Early American Cents in 1949, and Penny Whimsy in 1958. Sheldon developed the 70-point grading scale that is familiar to today's collectors. His grading scale was based on the value of common varieties of 1794 large cents. He formed three different large cent collections. His first collection was sold to Charles Fisher in 1932 to finance his medical education. His second collection including 566 large cents consigned to Stack's for sale in October 1938. His third collection that included all collectible early cent varieties as well as 30 NC varieties was sold to Roy E. Naftzger, Jr.
