Description

1794 HEAD OF 1794 CENT, VF DETAILS
CONDITION CENSUS S-66

1794 S-66 R5 VF Detail, Scratch, PCGS. Glossy light olive and chocolate brown. Sharpness near VF20 but there are several very light rim bruises on both sides, the notable ones left of the lowest curls. A fine, old scratch meanders from the middle of the cap to just under the earlobe and on to the chin, and there are nicks scattered over both sides including two on the left edge of the forehead. No hint of roughness or verdigris. The edge over TES is beveled thanks to a minor planchet clip, as struck. MDS, Heck die state 3, Breen state III, with a strong die crack along the lower edge of the pole to the dentils and light die clashmarks on the obverse. Called VF20 net F15 and CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF20 net F12 and CC#4, his photo #21678. This cataloger's EAC grade is net F12. One of the slightly finer examples is impounded in the ANS Museum, so the opportunity to obtain a better example is quite limited. The attribution is noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. Three highest graded at PCGS: 2 in 30, 1 in 35. 35657.95/40347224.

The first director of the new Philadelphia Mint was David Rittenhouse, perhaps the second most skilled scientist in America, behind Benjamin Franklin. Rittenhouse was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania on April 8, 1732. President Washington appointed him to the post of Mint Director on April 14, 1792, and he accepted three months later. Largely self-taught, Rittenhouse mastered Newton's Principia at an early age. His interests revolved around astronomy, mathematics, surveying, and instrument making. During the Revolutionary War, Rittenhouse served on the Committee of Safety, where he put his scientific skills to use, supervising local cannon production, and suggesting improvements to rifles. Rittenhouse also served as Treasurer of Pennsylvania, and he served the University of Pennsylvania as professor of astronomy, vice-provost, and a member of the board of trustees. An active member of the American Philosophical Society after being elected to membership in 1768, he served the Society as curator, librarian, secretary, vice-president, and finally as president from 1791 to 1796. Rittenhouse died on June 27, 1796. In a memorial eulogy, Dr. Benjamin Rush called Rittenhouse one of the enlightened ones. He was "one of the luminaries of the eighteenth century."
