Description
1795 "Jefferson Head" Cent
1795 Jefferson Head, Plain VF 30 Planchet Flaws. S-80, High R.5. While only a semi-official mint product, the 1795 Jefferson Head cents have, over the years, acquired a legendary status among advanced and knowledgeable collectors. They were struck by John Harper to demonstrate to a congressional committee how U.S. coinage could be struck outside an official government facility. The mint was seen by some at the time as an extravagance that cost more to operate than the face value of the coins it produced. In a curious act of patriotic largess, the committee members paid Harper for the coins he produced out of their own pockets--an unimaginable gesture from today's Congress. This reimbursement from Congress gives these coins a semi-official status. This piece is well defined on each side and well centered. The surfaces are a dark, glossy, chocolate-brown and what defects there are mostly are limited to voids in the planchet at the time of striking. Of the highest order of rarity and importance to collectors of early copper.
