Tied for Seventh Best 1795 S-74 Cent

1795 1C Lettered Edge AU58 NGC. XF40 EAC. S-74, Die State V, High R.3. Walter Breen suggested that approximately 8,000 examples of this variety were struck, and further noted that this was about a day's work at the Mint. A document prepared by David Rittenhouse in 1794 detailed the time and expense necessary to produce 20,000 large cents. From this, it is possible to determine how many could be struck in a day. Basically, Rittenhouse noted that 20,000 cents took two and a half days to coin, yielding Breen's figure of 8,000 coins per day. This is a splendid cent with wonderful chocolate brown color. The obverse has numerous tiny nicks as well as a minor edge dent, all which keep this out of the top six coins. This example is tied for seventh finest of the variety.
