Description

Finest Known 1795 NC-3 Cent

1795 1C Plain Edge--Corroded-ANACS. Good 6 Details. NC-3, High R.7. This is only the fifth example of the 1795 NC-3 die variety known, and it is clearly the finest. Every other known example is low quality, grading either Fair 2 or Basel State (Poor) 1 by Noyes. The obverse has a complete outline of Liberty with the lower hair strands visible. The date is weak and LIBERTY is absent. The reverse has ONE CENT and most of the wreath boldly outlined, with UNITED complete and parts of STATES and AMERICA visible. Olive and tan surfaces are lightly corroded.
This reverse die is known only on this variety, and the low grade of survivors has not permitted a complete description. ONE CENT is central within the wreath, with CENT low. The leaf tip left of C is nearly level with the top of that letter. The leaf point left of O is above the center of that letter. A leaf pair inside the right branch at T in CENT has both leaves below or touching that letter, similar to S-78 but no others. The leaf pair right of ONE nearly touches the right top of T below and ends opposite the lower serif of E. The left branch has just three berries, all inside. This is the only 1795 reverse that does not have an outer left berry. The left terminal leaf bends sharply upward.
This is an incredible opportunity to obtain the finest known of just five examples. We sold the previous finest known example of the 1795 NC-3 in our January 2005 sale of the Rasmussen sale for $4,600, and that coin graded just Fair 2. This one is twice as nice. EAC 4.
