Indented, Double Struck in Collar
AU55 1795 Plain Edge Cent, S-78
1795 1C Plain Edge--Double Struck in Collar & Indented--AU55
PCGS. S-78, B-8, R.1. This cent shifted or rotated slightly
between its two strikes. Liberty has a double profile, and the back
of the cap is also doubled, with the fainter impression from the
initial strike. The second strike has a straight indent near the
obverse rim between 7 and 9 o'clock. Apparently, the shift of the
coin between strikes brought a portion of the piece against a
portion of the press, although no such indent is seen on the
rotated double struck Robinson example (Breen Cent
Encyclopedia, page 256). An early owner must have appreciated
the unique look of this coin, since it has a whisper of wear, and
