The February 2001 Goldberg sale of the Benson Collection, Part I, opened with a strong emphasis on early American copper, reflecting the breadth and quality of one of the most respected cabinets of its era. The large cents began with the 1793 issues, including Chain, Wreath, and Liberty Cap examples, followed by an exceptional run of 1794s encompassing numerous die marriages cataloged with reference to Del Bland and other specialists. Notable highlights included high-grade Liberty Caps of 1795-1796, Draped Bust cents through the late 1790s. Many pieces traced pedigrees to Naftzger, Clapp, and other renowned collectors, giving the collection strong scholarly and market appeal.
The sale continued with a comprehensive offering of early 19th-century cents, including Condition Census representatives of 1803, 1804, and 1807 issues, and important Classic Heads such as the 1808 and 1811. Middle and late dates were also strongly represented, with Mint State and proof examples from the 1820s through 1850s, many exhibiting original red color. The half cents provided additional copper depth, with 1793 and 1794 examples, early 19th-century rarities and attractive later dates. Together, the Benson Collection demonstrated not only completeness but also quality across the copper series, making the 2001 Goldberg sale a reference point for collectors and students of early American copper.
