The September 1880 Harzfeld sale of the W.W. Thurston Collection was notable for its extensive offering of early American copper, with large cents forming a centerpiece. The sale opened with foundational 1793 issues-Chain, Wreath, and Liberty Cap cents-some described as fine and very desirable. The 1794 cents included important Maris varieties such as the "Short Bust," "Fallen 4," "Crooked 7," and the very rare Maris 33 without dividing line in the fraction. The catalog emphasized the scarcity of these varieties, several noted as among the rarest of the year. Subsequent highlights included a thick planchet 1795 with a lettered edge, described as one of the finest known, and high-quality Liberty Caps of 1796. Early Draped Bust issues such as an uncirculated 1796 and sharp 1797 and 1798s added further strength, while the 1799 cent was singled out as "much better than usually offered," with unusually strong detail.

Later early dates were also well represented. The catalog listed high-grade 1800-1804 cents, including a Mint State 1802 with traces of original red and an outstanding 1804 with bold detail, called better than usually found even in the finest collections. The 1807 over 1806 was described as a remarkably fine specimen, while the 1809 from the Mickley Collection stood out as strictly uncirculated. Middle and late dates included proofs and brilliant uncirculated examples into the 1830s and 1840s, such as the rare 1823 proof, 1832 red uncirculated, and the 1841 and 1842 proof cents. The sale concluded with bright red Braided Hair cents of the 1840s and 1850s, capped by rare proofs of 1855 and 1856. With its wide coverage from 1793 through the 1850s and a focus on rarity, preservation, and notable provenances, the Thurston Collection offered one of the more remarkable copper cabinets auctioned in the late 19th century.
