Description

1795 S-76b Plain Edge Cent, MS63 Brown
Early Die State

1795 1C S-76b R1 Thin Planchet with Plain Edge, MS63 Brown PCGS. Frosty light steel brown with lighter brown faded down from mint color in protected areas and slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints of the portrait. Smooth and lustrous with very nice eye appeal. There are some of the usual tiny planchet imperfections at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse, a result of a slight axial die misalignment (the die faces not perfectly parallel). A very tiny tick or chip between the E & N in CENT can help identify this cent. EDS, Breen state II, with smooth, slightly reflective fields and light die clashmarks on both sides. Graded AU55 Choice and tied for CC#16 in the Noyes census, his photo #23976. Bland says MS61 and tied for CC#1. This cataloger's EAC grade is MS60. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35723.63/15004993).

The October 1991 Superior Galleries sale of the G. Lee Kuntz Collection was one of the landmark copper events of its era, featuring an expansive and carefully built cabinet of large cents. Early highlights included a superb 1793 Chain cent, multiple Wreath cents, and Liberty Caps of 1793, followed by an exceptional run of 1794s covering a broad range of Sheldon numbers. Among the centerpiece offerings was the famous 1795 S-79 Reeded Edge cent, one of the rarest Sheldon varieties, which realized $115,500 and set a record for the type. The breadth of early dates continued with strong selections of 1797-1799 cents, including notable overdates and distinctive die states, many tracing pedigrees to past important cabinets.

The later early dates and middle dates of the series were equally impressive. Classic Head cents (1808-1814) included high-grade representatives, and the collection extended into the late dates with completeness and quality across Newcomb varieties. Many coins were noted for their originality, eye appeal, and Condition Census standing, making the Kuntz Collection a resource for both collectors and scholars. Realizations across the board were strong, and the overall sale, bringing nearly $4 million, reaffirmed Superior Galleries' reputation for presenting landmark early copper collections.
