The John Story Jenks Collection, sold in December 1921 by Henry Chapman in Philadelphia, was one of the most extensive and significant numismatic auctions ever conducted in America. Spanning ancient Greek, Roman, and Byzantine coinage through world issues, colonial and state coinages, and the entire U.S. series including patterns and early rarities, the catalog reflected a lifetime of dedicated collecting. Jenks, who began acquiring coins in the 1850s, built his holdings over more than six decades, securing many of the finest examples available and carefully upgrading to ensure high quality throughout. The sale was accompanied by 42 photographic plates illustrating over 1,400 coins, underscoring both the size and the caliber of the collection.

auction was remarkable not only for its breadth but also for its historical importance. Every major area of numismatics was represented, with rarities ranging from ancient masterpieces to foundational pieces of American coinage, such as Massachusetts silver, colonial issues, early federal copper, silver, and gold, as well as patterns and medals. Chapman emphasized the superior condition and careful curation of the collection, noting Jenks's practice of replacing coins with finer specimens whenever possible. With thousands of lots spread over ten days, the Jenks sale stood as a landmark event that influenced American numismatics for generations, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire material from one of the most complete and carefully assembled collections of its time.
