Description

Important 1795 S-76a Unlettered Edge Cent

1795 1C Unlettered Edge VF30 ANACS. S-76a, R.5 as a variety, but R.7 without the edge lettering. All earlier large cents from 1793 through Sheldon-75 of 1795 are easy to authenticate without edge lettering. The S-76 die marriage presents unique circumstances, as examples from this die combination were also struck on thinner planchets with a plain edge. This lovely cent is accompanied by letters from Jack H. Robinson and Darwin Palmer, both prominent members of the Early American Coppers club. Jack Robinson had shown this coin to Walter Breen and Del Bland, who both opined that it is a genuine unlettered edge cent on the older thick planchet stock.
The letter from Darwin Palmer provides technical data regarding this piece. Specifically, this piece weighs 197.1 grains, quite close to the 208 grain standard of the earlier lettered edge pieces, and much further from the 168 grain standard of plain edge coins. Very few early large cents weighed exactly the standard of either 208 grains or 168 grains. The diameter of 1.153 inches conforms to the standard diameter of the early coppers. Both of these details confirm that this is an example of an unlettered edge cent as struck, and not a coin with its edge lettering later removed.
The physical coin is also neat, for it has choice surfaces without any defects. The color is light tan with hints of olive and pale gold. A splendid example and extremely rare, a coin that will bridge the gap between early cent collecting and mint error collecting.(#1377) (Registry values: N991)
