1796 S-84, B-5 Cent, MS64 Red and Brown
A Strong Condition Census Candidate
1796 1C Liberty Cap, S-84, B-5, R.3, MS64 Red and Brown PCGS.
CAC. Ex: Oakes. Breen Die State II. Both dies saw extensive use
for the 1796 Liberty Cap coinage. The obverse die appears on S-84,
85, 86, and 87, and the reverse die appears on S-82, 83, 84, and on
1798 S-156. The reverse has a delicate die crack from the border
over the last S, to the tops of the O and F. The obverse has a few
faint die lines that appear to be cracks, although they are
unrecorded in current references. The most prominent extends
downward from the underside of the chin, nearly reaching the
pole.We are unable to locate this piece in any census listings. All currently recorded coins in the Bland and Noyes census have been offered in fairly recent sales, with one exception. Bland lists an MS60 coin from the Col. E.H.R. Green estate to B.G. Johnson. That coin has no other provenance and no plated auction appearances. This example might be the Green-Johnson coin.

Noyes calls three of those coins Mint State, and adds an example from the 1976 ANA sale as the four Mint State survivors from this die pair recorded in his reference. Only one of the 18 coins in the Noyes photo book, with grades down to VF30, is not plated, and that piece is the Connecticut State Library specimen. The present coin does not match any of those in the Noyes book. Our EAC grade of MS63 would rate this piece as tied for third finest known in the Noyes census, and tied for finest known in the Bland census.
This impressive cent has a nearly complete obverse border, with only a trace of dentils below the date, and a complete reverse border. Both sides exhibit frosty light olive-brown luster with a few dark steel splashes of the obverse, including a small spot on Liberty's jaw. Considerable mint red is evident above Liberty's head, through LIBERTY, and in the protected areas of the wreath and lettering on the reverse. A few dull nicks are noted on each side, including a pair of shallow marks at Liberty's mouth, and others at the N in CENT.
PCGS has certified 23 Mint State 1796 Liberty Cap cents of all varieties (12/13), and only three of those are designated as Red and Brown. The other two grade MS66 and MS62. Numerically, PCGS has only certified five examples finer than the Oakes specimen. NGC has certified one example as MS64 Brown and one other graded MS65 Brown. That service has never examined a Red and Brown 1796 Liberty Cap cent.
This incredible 1796 Liberty Cap cent is certainly destined for a high grade and important large cent collection, perhaps one of those recorded in the PCGS Set Registry website. Our EAC grade MS63.
