Description
The Beckwith-Newcomb 1796 S-103 Cent
1796 1C LIHERTY AU53 NGC. XF40 EAC. S-103, Die State I, Low R.4. This cent is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. The obverse is from the famous blundered die with the B of LIBERTY first entered upside down, resulting in extra serifs at the upper and lower right curves of the correctly placed B. This gives the appearance of a letter H, thus the popular LIHERTY name for this obverse. Specialists know that this obverse die was used with two different reverse dies, thus both S-103 and S-104 represent the popular type. This variety has a separate listing in the Guide Book adding to its popularity and demand. It is also important to note that only one Mint State example of this Red Book type is known, along with two AU coins and just four XF examples, including this coin. This is Condition Census for the variety, being the fifth finest known example of S-103, and seventh finest of all 1796 LIHERTY cents. In the Stack's sale of the Roper Collection, this cent was graded AU50 and offered as second finest known, based on the Census of 50-50-45-30-20-15 as recorded by Dr. Sheldon. This is a remarkable 1796 cent, with surfaces that are uncharacteristically choice. Both the obverse and the reverse have splendid medium brown color with slightly darker chocolate brown on the devices. Liberty's profile, as well as the wreath, are outlined with lighter reddish brown, faded from original mint red luster. The obverse has a very light vertical scratch across the bust (actually two closely spaced parallel scratches) along with a few very light abrasions. The reverse has similar minor surface marks.
