Description

1796 S-83 Liberty Cap Cent, VF30
Early Die State

1796 1C S-83 R4 Liberty Cap VF30 PCGS. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel, nearly black. Much of the planchet is smooth, especially the reverse, but areas of fine roughness show on both sides. The roughness is strongest at LI and the cap into the field to the left, and traces of hard verdigris show on both sides. Reddish corrosion left of the first A in AMERICA is a good identifying feature of this cent. EDS, Breen state I, before the obverse die cracked. The area at ENT into the wreath below is rough and covered with planchet chips thanks to a weak strike in that area. Graded net VF25 by Bland and CC#7 in his census. This cataloger's EAC grade is VF35 sharpness net VF20. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35756.30/15004998).
Ex Superior 9/7/1997:923 ($1815)-COL Steven K. Ellsworth.

The September 1997 Superior U.S. Coin and Currency Auction was a large-scale event with over 2,500 lots and total realizations exceeding $4.5 million, yet its strength lay in the presentation of early American copper. The catalog included 1793 Chain and Wreath cents, as well as Liberty Cap cents of 1793-1796 that combined rarity with strong eye appeal. Early Draped Bust cents followed, highlighted by notable 1796 and 1797 die varieties, plus several scarce 1799 cents, long regarded as a key rarity in the series. Many of these pieces came with pedigrees to well-known cabinets, underscoring the auction's importance as both a market and a reference point for collectors.

Later early dates also carried weight, with strong Condition Census representatives from 1800 through 1814, including scarce overdates and rare die marriages. Half cents added depth, with early 1793 and 1794 issues as well as notable overstrikes on Talbot, Allum & Lee undertypes, while large cents included fresh offerings from middle and late dates. Together, these early copper sections showed Superior's ability to balance rarity, provenance, and quality, giving collectors opportunities to acquire pieces that rarely appeared at public sale. The 1997 auction thus reinforced its place as a memorable event for copper specialists, contributing both discoveries and pedigreed examples to the ongoing scholarship of U.S. large cents.
