Description

1796 S-84 Liberty Cap Cent, MS64 Brown
Ex: Brown-Husak-Gardner

1796 1C S-84 R3 Liberty Cap MS64 Brown PCGS. Lustrous light brown with hints of very faded mint color in some protected areas and slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. This cent is beautiful. Looks mint state but a glass reveals a trace of friction on the very highest points of the devices. No spots or stains, only a few trivial marks. The best identifying marks are two tiny planchet flakes at the dentil roots left of the cap, a nick-like thin planchet fissure on the left side of the cap, a small tick in the field before the lips, and a tiny tick on the left side of the O in ONE. M-LDS, Breen state III, with a fine die crack at OF into the field above the adjacent S. Die polishing has weakened the leaves under the T in CENT and CA in AMERICA. Graded MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #21185. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#8. This cataloger's EAC grade is AU55 Choice. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35759.64/13470532).

The March 1988 Stack's auction of the Herman Halpern Collection was hailed as one of the greatest sales of United States large cents ever held, offering over 750 lots that encompassed virtually the entire Sheldon and Newcomb series. The early dates were breathtaking in both scope and quality: four Chain cents, nine Wreath cents, and three Liberty Caps of 1793, the majority ranking in the Condition Census. The 1794s were extraordinary, with 90 pieces including 14 in Mint State, 24 About Uncirculated, and nearly fifty Condition Census examples. Liberty Caps of 1795-1796 added further distinction, with five Mint State coins and six additional Condition Census pieces, while the Draped Bust cents from 1796-1807 totaled 146 coins, including 30 in Mint State. Rarities such as the 1794 Starred Reverse, 1795 Jefferson Head, and other legendary Sheldon numbers were presented to bidders.

Halpern's Classic Head cents (1808-1814) were also unusually strong, with 10 Mint State coins and 13 AU examples, each date represented in the Condition Census-remarkable for a series often found in lower grades. Later dates, from 1816 through the end of the large cent series in 1857, included astounding runs of Mint State and proof coins, with highlights such as 1816 Newcomb 1 ("Golden Biscuit"), superb Randall Hoard survivors of 1817, and complete high-grade runs of 1830s-1850s issues. In all, the collection boasted more than 350 Mint State large cents and nearly 200 Condition Census pieces, many with pedigrees to Seavey, Parmelee, Brand, Newcomb, Bareford, Naftzger, and other luminaries. The Halpern sale not only dispersed one of the most magnificent copper cabinets ever assembled but also produced a richly documented catalog that remains an indispensable reference for specialists in early American copper.
