Description
1796 S-86 Liberty Cap Cent, VF30
Condition Census
1796 1C S-86 R5 Liberty Cap VF30 PCGS. Lightly cleaned and
recolored chocolate brown and steel with bluish steel overtones.
Covered with very fine roughness but there is no verdigris. The
notable marks are a depression or planchet void on the bust near
the neck, a small chip in the field under the cap, a collection of
hairline scratches at the forehead, and an arcing scratch over TAT
in STATES. EDS, Breen state I, before any crumbling or die rust in
the field close to the nose and lips. The devices are bold and the
eye appeal is decent, especially on the reverse, in spite of the
minor roughness and recoloring. Graded VF30 net VF20 and tied for

VF25 and CC#5. This cataloger's EAC grade is net VF20+.

The October 1955 Federal Coin Exchange catalog, issued for the Ohio State Numismatic Association's fall convention in Toledo, featured an impressively broad offering of early American copper. Colonial coppers were represented by Rosa Americana issues, Wood's coinage, Pitt tokens, Chalmers pieces, Nova Constellatio coppers, and a significant run of Connecticut, New Jersey, and Vermont pieces. These led naturally into the early federal series, where large cents formed a centerpiece of the sale. Offered were 1793 Chain and Wreath cents, Liberty Caps of 1793-1796, and a variety of Draped Bust cents through the 1790s, many described as sharply struck and with strong surfaces for their era.
Half cents were also well represented, beginning with 1793 and 1794 examples and including scarce early 19th-century varieties, as well as later dates in pleasing grades. The catalog emphasized originality and collectability across these early copper offerings, balancing key rarities with affordable examples. Together, the colonial and federal coppers provided both specialists and general collectors with opportunities to acquire historically significant pieces, while the variety and condition of the offerings underscored the convention's role as an important marketplace for early American numismatics.
