Description

1796 S-88 Liberty Cap Cent, VF30
Early Die State

1796 1C S-88 R4 Liberty Cap VF30 PCGS. Slightly glossy dark steel with lighter olive brown and chocolate in protected areas, especially on the reverse. The planchet is covered with uniform extremely faint roughness that dulls the natural gloss, but there is no verdigris. Just minor contact marks including myriad faint hairlines on the face and neck and a few more in the field under the cap. Nicely struck EDS, Breen state I. The obverse die is uncracked and all the devices are sharply struck (which is unusual for this variety). Graded VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #62628. This cataloger's EAC grade is net VF20. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (35771.30/32782905).

The 2015 Early American Coppers (EAC) Convention Sale held May 2 in Irving, Texas, reflected both the scholarly focus and community spirit of the club. Cataloged by Kevin Vinton and Travis Hollon, and presented by Chris McCawley and Shawn Yancey, the sale included colonial coinage, early federal copper, and related tokens, with all proceeds benefiting EAC. Colonial highlights included a strong run of New Jersey, Fugio, and Connecticut pieces, along with notable Talbot, Allum & Lee tokens and British and American political issues such as Thomas Spence tokens. This introduction underscored the educational character of the sale while setting the stage for the federal copper sections.

Early copper formed the centerpiece, beginning with half cents such as rare 1794 Cohen varieties and scarce 1804 "Spiked Chin" die states from the Missouri Cabinet. The large cent section opened with 1793 Chain and Wreath issues, followed by a broad array of 1794-1797 Liberty Caps and Draped Busts, including scarce die marriages and coins from major pedigrees. Later offerings included 1798-1807 cents with distinctive die states and unusual mint errors, plus strong middle and late date cents highlighted by Condition Census examples. With its mix of rarity, variety, provenance, and detailed cataloguing, the 2015 EAC Sale reinforced the club's role in advancing both the scholarship and enjoyment of early American copper.
