Description

Early Die State 1797 Sheldon-126

1797 Reverse of '97, Stems, S-126, R.3. Sharpness of AU 50, net XF 40. A rare early die state of this scarce variety, the obverse crack has not yet formed, although there is a die dot mid-field before the throat, apparently from a bubble in the die steel which allowed the crack to later form. Cleaned and retoned a medium-brown, 3 light "X"s are are located in the obverse fields. The planchet was not completely smooth, and roller marks were not eliminated by the strike, notably in the left obverse field and on the reverse. An impressive and desirable example of the early die state which is well up in the Condition Census and tied for seventh finest known with two or three others.
Ex: Thomas D. Reynolds, 11/93.
