Description

PCGS 1797 Reverse of '97, Stems MS 65 Red and Brown. S-123, R.4. EAC graded MS 64. Full, subdued mint red toning to brown with slight evidence of planchet flaws behind the lower ribbon end and a nearly vertical one in the form of a thin line from the drapery into the bust. Well struck with splendid surfaces and the diagnostic die cut below the eye.
While many of the Nichols Hoard coins are high grade and relatively problem-free, this is one of the best examples seen. In fact, in the catalog copy from the Norweb Sale, the statement was made, "...we feel that none is better than the present specimen." Of the three varieties in the Randall Hoard, this variety is easily distinguished by the "cut" below the eye of Liberty--a diagnostic of all known examples of the S-123 cents.
Ex: New Netherlands Coin Company, privately 6/10/53--Mrs. R. Henry Norweb--Bowers and Merena 11/88:2760--James U. Blanchard & Co.
