Description

1798 VF 30. S-162, R.4. Condition Census. The unfinished top curl, straight top date, blunt 1 obverse, coupled with the reverse with the die lines above ER of AMERICA variety. Well centered and struck, toned an alluring medium-brown with greenish highlights noted near the legends and devices. An important rarity in this grade with only one gem example known, then the next three examples are tied, including this coin, as number two through four in the Condition Census.
Late die state with the following cracks noted: there is a vertical crack from the rim behind the ribbon into the field below, another from the upper ribbon point toward the first crack, another through the base of the 8 to the rim beneath Liberty's bust, and a faint crack through the upper part of the L of LIBERTY. On the reverse there is an arcing crack above, and not touching, the letters OF A in OF AMERICA, and the reverse die has clashed with the obverse with drapery lines at the top right of the wreath, and abundant curls at the base of the wreath in the surrounding field.
Identifiable by a hidden spot between the ribbon knot and the top of Liberty's ear, a minor diagonal mark on Liberty's chest, on the reverse are two small marks above the N of ONE, and a tiny mark atop two denticles below the last 0 of the fraction.
Thought to be Ex: Doug Bird per the Noyes Condition Census; noted to be Ex: Long Beach Coin Convention, (10/82); Del Bland; John Christiensen; Larry Hanks and Ron Gillio.
