Rotated Double Struck 1798 Cent AU53
Scarce S-158 First Hair Style Variety
1798 1C First Hair Style--Double Struck, Second Strike
Rotated--AU53 NGC. S-158, B-17, R.4. Breen Die State II with a
heavy die crack near the T in UNITED. Medium brown and steel-blue
with glimpses of golden-brown. Both strikes are independently
normal, but the second strike is rotated 90 degrees CCW from the
initial strike. Likely, the piece was struck, then inadvertently
fed between the dies a second time. Even if this cent were not a
significant mint error, it would still be important as a sharp,
lightly abraded, nearly carbon-free, and partly lustrous
representative of this scarce First Hair Style variety. EAC
