Description

Scarce 1799 Overdate Large Cent

1799/8 1C VG 10. S-188, R.4. A pleasant chocolate-brown example of this ever-popular issue with minor distractions that do not limit the desirability of the coin. The surfaces appear smooth at first glance, although they are microscopically granular under magnification. There are two thin pinscratches of antique origin that intersect on the obverse in the hair behind Liberty's neck, but these are not appreciably detrimental to the overall eye appeal. Several other abrasions are evident on each side that are consistent with considerable time spent in the channels of commerce.
The 1799 issue (both the overdate and plain varieties) has long been in demand by date collectors and specialists as the scarcest large cent by date, and those in hobby circles were aware of this fact as early as the 1850s. It has been reported that early numismatic entrepreneurs would travel the countryside in New England and the Middle Atlantic states in wagons with large signs advertising the fact that they would pay up to $25 for cents from 1799, a considerable sum of money for the time. The mystique and lore of the issue has never subsided, and today every serious collector of early copper coinage desires to own an example.
