Description

1799/8 Cent, S-188, VG8

1799/8 1C VG8 PCGS. S-188, B-2, R.4. Breen's large cent Encyclopedia comments that this is the rarest large cent date and certainly the most famous, repeating the old--and possibly apocryphal--chestnut about Joseph J. Mickley beginning his celebrated career as a numismatist in a vain search for a cent from his birth year. The present piece shows smooth, even wear over dark-brown surfaces that are otherwise untroubled. The closed loop of the last 9 that characterizes the overdate is distinguishable, if not bold, and all major devices and legends are well brought up. A nice opportunity to fill that missing slot in an advanced large cent collection. EAC 6.(Registry values: P6)
