Description

The Dr. French-T. James Clarke 1800 S-206 Cent

1800 1C MS61 Brown NGC. VF35 EAC. S-206, Die State II, High R.3. When Dr. Sheldon first published his large cent research in 1949, he considered this variety to be Rarity-3. In Penny Whimsy, he noted that this is in the "lower or middle range of R-4, not R-3. Another 1800 for which our earlier census estimate was a bit too liberal. These 1800's are very educative when one comes to close quarters with them." This example approaches Die State III with the area from the fraction over to CA of AMERICA raised, but not yet formed into a rim break. This cent has lovely chocolate brown surfaces with traces of gold, faded from mint red. This is especially visible on the reverse. It is the third finest known example of this scarce variety.
