Description
Second Finest 1800 S-210 Rarity
1800 1C MS61 Brown NGC. XF45 EAC. S-210, Die State I, High R.5. This is the Breen plate coin with the obverse and reverse also illustrated in the Bill Noyes reference. Denis Loring typed the following explanation on his envelope: "The Comma variety, the most famous rarity of the 1800s. Second finest known, and was CC-1 in PW. Ex Hays (of 1794 fame)--McAusland--W.C. Blaisdell." In Penny Whimsy, Dr. Sheldon rated this as Rarity-7 and recorded the Condition Census as 40-35-15-10-10-8. He continued: "Nine now reported, eight in collectors' hands, and two of the new ones are the 40-coin and the 35-coin. The example previously graded VF-20, and previously finest known, is now called F-15. But five were known when EAC was written, and two of those were then rather new discoveries. This famous variety came near to being R-8 in the earlier book. Mr. Clapp 'never saw one' until he got the Gillette coin, VG-10, in 1937 after some decades of collecting." This cent is sharply struck and has dark steel and olive-brown surfaces with intermingled tan color. The obverse is perfect while the reverse has only a thin rim break at lower right. This is the second finest example listed in the Census.Ex: W.W. Hays; later R. McAusland (5/53); Willard C. Blaisdell (10/74); Denis W. Loring (12/77); Robinson S. Brown, Jr. (Superior, 9/86), lot 307; R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (2/23/92); Eric Streiner (1/94).(#1449) (Registry values: N2998)
