Finest Known 1800 S-205; The Breen Cent Book Plate Coin

1800 1C MS64 Brown NGC. MS63 EAC. S-205, Die State II, Low R.4. An intriguing coin envelope accompanies this lot, no doubt from the typewriter of Denis Loring: "Rather than compete with the Sandmanova trio, I let them buy it and add their little profit. Room for everybody in here. Ex Starr, lot 35. Lotsa color." The Sandmanova trio consisted of Gene Sanders, Ken Goldman, and Anthony Terranova. This variety has an intriguing Census, for the five finest are all Mint State, while the next five extend down to the VF grades. At the time this cent was offered for sale in the Starr Collection, it was considered the second finest known behind the Naftzger Collection coin; however, today it is realized that this specimen is actually the finest known.
Heavy die failure is visible at RTY of LIBERTY. This choice cent has considerable original orange luster and probably deserves the Red and Brown designation. The balance has lovely olive-brown color with a few small spots on the obverse, most notable just right of Y. The reverse is peppered with tiny spots; however, there is no indication of active corrosion. This is the plate coin in Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia.
Ex: Eugene Gardner (Stack's, 2/65), lot 1132; Floyd T. Starr (Stack's, 6/84), lot 35; Ken Goldman (6/84); Denis Loring (2/00).(#1449) (Registry values: N4719)
