Joel William Spingarn, a World War II veteran, was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 20, 1921. Initially interested in stamp collecting, he soon developed an interest in photography, becoming his life-long vocation. His coin collecting interest began when a coin show was held at a hotel where he was staying. Spingarn eventually discovered early copper, and nearly completed his collection of Sheldon numbers, lacking only the 1795 S-79 Reeded edge cent and the 1801 S-217 rarity. Spingarn passed away on May 14, 2018, and was buried at the Long Island National Cemetery.
