Description
Rare 1800 NC-3 Cent
1800 1C VF Details NCS. VG7 EAC. NC-3, R.6. Two die states were recorded by Walter Breen, based on how defective the 0s in the date appear. These stages seem to be more of a judgment call than actual die states. This cent is listed by Del Bland in the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia in a tie for fifth finest known. It is an extremely desirable example of a true rarity, and will almost certainly be actively contested when it crosses the auction block. Both surfaces, and especially the reverse, are covered in red corrosion with some minor burnishing apparent on the obverse. This appears to be "old" corrosion in that there is no evidence that it remains active. The reverse is rotated about 30 degrees counterclockwise. Dr. Sheldon discovered this variety in 1947, with his coin, from the Brand Collection, remaining the finest known today. NCS Corroded.Ex: Donald Ballou; C. Douglas Smith (1/27/56); Dorothy Paschal (11/77); Chalkley Collection (Superior, 1/90), lot 412.(#1449) (Registry values: N208)
