Lovely 1800 S-209 Cent
1800 1C XF45 NGC. XF40 EAC. S-209, Die State V, R.3. This example is not specifically identified in the Condition Census, although the grade suggests that it ranks within the top ten for the variety. The obverse die appears to have a slight projection down from the lowest lock of hair, between the hair curl and the point of the digit 1. Struck from an intermediate die state with prominent clash marks on the obverse. Dr. Sheldon called these "suction marks," the standard term for clash marks half a century ago. We are not quite sure the origin of the term. Did numismatists of the day think that suction pulled the design elements from one side of the coin through the planchet to the other? The quality is well above average, especially for an 1800 cent, with attractive olive-brown coloration, intermingled with golden-brown on the obverse. Only a few minuscule abrasions are present. This cent will bring a premium, not only for its rather high numeric grade, but also for the quality of its surfaces.
