Description
The Only Mint State 1801 Three Errors Cent
1801 1C 3 Errors MS63 Brown NGC and EAC. S-219, Die State IV, Low R.2. The Three Errors large cent is one of those highly popular varieties simply because of an unusual die blunder--or in this case, blunders. The fraction reads a meaningless 1/000, the right branch of the wreath is lacking its stem to the lower left, and the U of UNITED was first placed in the die upside down, giving the appearance of IINITED. This variety is listed in the Guide Book, and has been for many years. In fact, it has been listed since the very first issues of the Red Book. One of the keys to the importance and value of a given variety is its listing in the popular Red Book. This is the Gies-Hines-Sheldon example and is the finest known for the variety. In fact, it is the only Three Errors cent called Mint State by Del Bland. The photo of this variety on page 631 in the Breen Large Cent book is incorrectly labeled as this coin, but is actually the second finest known Halpern coin. We are not sure who first discovered the variety, however, it has been known for well over a century, and was recognized by Francis Doughty in his 1890 reference on the big coppers. This cent has wonderful tan surfaces with considerable original orange mint color. The 1995 Bowers and Merena catalog notes that this coin was once certified MS63 Red and Brown by NGC, although they have now regraded it MS63 Brown. Without a doubt, it deserves the Red and Brown designation, in our opinion. This is only the fourth time this cent has been offered for sale in the past 100 years. The other appearances were in 1904 (Fixed Price offering), 1935, and 1995. Both sides of this lovely cent were illustrated in Noyes, and the reverse in Penny Whimsy.
