Description

Scarce 1801 S-214 Cent

1801 1C AU50 NGC. VF25 EAC. S-214, Die State II, High R.3. In 1925, Howard Newcomb considered this to be a very rare variety. In 1949, Dr. Sheldon rated it as Rarity-6 and noted only about a dozen examples were known to him. A half century later, enough had been found to bring the rarity to High R.3, suggesting a little over 200 examples are known. This example is from an intermediate die state with die failure just beginning to weaken RTY on the obverse. The reverse die remained in approximately the same stage throughout the life of the obverse. This example has lovely dark brown and deep olive color blended together with slightly eroded surfaces. A small round penetrating surface mark is located in the obverse field, close to the center of Liberty's neck. Del Bland's extended Condition Census includes pedigrees of 17 different coins ranging from MS63 down to VF25, including this example that is one of three tied for 15th through 17th positions.
