Description

Fifth Finest 1801 S-213 Cent

1801 1C AU55 NGC. XF40 EAC. S-213, Die State V, Low R.3. This is Newcomb's variety 1c-Ac, which he considered the rarest die state. After Newcomb's work was published, a perfect obverse example was located, and now the perfect die coin is considered the rarest die state. The pattern of die cracks at the upper right obverse allow for immediate arm's-length attribution. This is the fifth finest known, according to Del Bland, who assigned a higher AU50 grade to a coin that has not been seen since the 1940s. Therefore, in all likelihood this is the fourth best available to collectors today. This is a splendid cent with attractive olive-brown color and a couple splashes of deeper steel toning. The reverse has reddish overtones. The surfaces of this piece are quite pleasing without any significant blemishes. While his 1801 cents may not rival the 1800 series, the Rasmussen Collection includes four finest known examples and six others in the top 10.
