Description
The Late Die State S-215 Ex: Downing-Smith-Paschal-Brown
1801 S-215, R.5. Sharpness of VF 35, net VF 20. Medium-brown color throughout and well struck with full detail on all the devices, despite the very late die state. There are some patches of porosity on the obverse, mostly in the right field and above Liberty. Apparently terminal die state, the obverse is cracked and swollen from the date through the lower curls, up to the rim behind the ribbon. On the reverse, severe clashing is noted from the bust, die cracks through TE of UNITED, two through AMERICA, another at the top of OF. What is most amazing of all is that a coin from such a late die state is so well preserved; in fact, this is tied for ninth finest known of the variety with one other piece. Furthermore, the pedigree is outstanding, with room for another name at the end.Ex: Homer K. Downing; 1952 ANA (New Netherlands Coin Co., #38), lot 1879; M. L. Kaplan, 8/52; C. Douglas Smith; Dorothy Paschal, 3/77; Robinson S. Brown, Jr. (Superior, 1/96), lot 298.
