Description
Historic Census Level 1801 S-216, B-6 Cent, MS63 Brown
1801 1C MS63 Brown PCGS. CAC. S-216, B-6, R.2. Breen Die State II, before the rim break develops over the STA of STATES. This impressive example has frosty cartwheel luster with attractive olive and steel surfaces blended with lighter tan that is faded from original red. While a few tiny scratches are visible in the left obverse field, exceptional aesthetic appeal is presented to the connoisseur. The S-216 die combination is one of the more plentiful varieties, with several nice Mint State pieces surviving. Bill Noyes grades the present piece MS60, and ranks it tied for fourth finest, while Del Bland also calls it MS60 and lists it as tied for sixth finest known. In the 1973 Naftzger catalog, it was graded MS60 and in the 1986 Robinson Brown catalog, it was called MS63. This coin was consigned to the 1996 Superior auction by Douglas McHenry, and it was one of few coins that did not actually belong to Brown. EAC 60.Ex: Thomas L. Elder (7/1920), lot 689; William Festus Morgan (J.C. Morgenthau, 6/1932), lot 34; B. Max Mehl; T. James Clarke (10/1954); R.E.
