Description

1801 S-218 Cent, VF30
The Rare Three Errors Reverse Variety

1801 1C S-218 R5+, Three Errors Reverse, VF30 PCGS. Dark steel with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. Sharply detailed and nearly void of marks, but the planchet is covered with fine roughness. There are a few microscopic specks of fine verdigris on the reverse, mostly at UNIT, and the only mark is a tiny scratch on the shoulder. Sharply struck EDS, earlier than Breen state I, with no die clashmarks from dentils over ERTY. The only clashmarks are light ones through ERT with stronger ones along the profile of the face. Clearly this cent was struck prior to the S-217 variety. Graded VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census behind the net-graded ANS example, his photo #38989. Not seen by Bland. This cataloger's EAC grade is net VF25. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (36269.30/15000055). PCGS population attributed as S-218: 1 in VF30; 0 finer (10/24).
