Description

The Proskey-Hines 1801 S-224 Cent

1801 1C XF45 NGC. VF25 EAC. S-224, Die State III, R.3. The rim break over AME on the reverse of this cent occurred very early in the life of the die. Although not in the Condition Census, this cent has an extremely important pedigree dating back to David Proskey and the early years of the 20th century. This is also the Newcomb Plate Coin, serving to illustrate state b of reverse H in his 1925 reference. The surfaces are pleasing with dark olive-brown color. A few minor marks are present, particularly on the reverse, and serve to establish the pedigree and the plate appearance of this cent.
