Description

1801 NORMAL DIES CENT, MS63 BROWN
FINEST AVAILABLE 1801 S-214

1801 S-214 R3 MS63 Brown PCGS, CAC Approved. Lustrous bluish steel and olive with traces of mellowed mint red in protected areas, especially on the upper part of the obverse. Unbroken satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is outstanding. No spots or stains and the only notable mark is a tiny horizontal nick in the field close under the end of the chin. A very attractive cent that would qualify for gem status except for the weak strike on the bust and the opposing area at S-OF. Breen mentions this strike problem on page 614 of his 2000 large cent encyclopedia where he states "Often weak on the profile and end of drapery, lower right obverse dentils, some leaves on the right branch, S OF, and upper right border, reflecting axial die misalignment of state III." M-LDS, Breen state II late, with die clashmarks on both sides and numerous cracks on the reverse, but the rim break over RTY has not occurred. Obvious die rust shows left of the hair ribbon. Called MS63 Choice and tied for CC#1 honors with the ANS example in the Noyes census list, his photo #21715. Bland also says MS63 and tied for finest with the ANS piece. The next 3 in the census have similar weakness on the bust. This cataloger's EAC grade is MS63. The obverse of this cent is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents. A beautiful cent, the finest available to collectors, and it comes with an important provenance. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; none finer. 36239.63/11483722.
