Description

1801 S-216 NORMAL DIES CENT, MS63 BROWN
NEWCOMB PLATE COIN

1801 S-216 R1 MS63 Brown PCGS. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate mottled with puffs of darker olive brown toning. Frosty reddish tan faded down from mint color shows in protected areas, especially on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and the only notable contact marks are two tiny nick-like planchet chips left of the L in LIBERTY. MDS, Breen state II, with clashmarks on both sides but without the narrow rim cud over STA. Graded AU55 and tied for CC#7 in the Noyes census, his photo #28381. Bland says MS61 and CC#5. This cataloger's EAC grade is MS60. Would rate a higher grade if not for the irregular toning. This is the plate coin in the 1925 Newcomb reference on the cents of 1801-1803, and the reverse is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. Comes with a great provenance. The attribution and Husak Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 2; none finer. 36245.63/50242700.
