1801 S-218 CENT, VF25
IMPORTANT THREE ERROR REVERSE
EX SHELDON-NAFTZGER
1801 S-218 R5 3-Error Reverse VF25 PCGS. A nicely detailed
cent that is covered with microscopic roughness under a glossy very
dark olive and steel brown patina. Specks of verdigris can be found
in protected places on both sides. May have been coated with a very
thin layer of lacquer or some similar protectant that enhances the
gloss (the so-called "Sheldonizing" process). The coating no longer
covers the highpoints. The best identifying marks are a tiny
pinprick on the jawline near the earlobe and a small rim nick over
the E in STATES. LDS, Breen state II. Swelling obliterates most of
ERTY but all 3 of the die-cutter errors on the reverse are clear.
Bland says VF25 net F15 and alone at CC#2 behind only the ANS
example. Noyes says VF35 net F15 and tied for CC#3 honors, his
photo #21848. This cataloger's EAC grade is F15+. Comes with an
interesting provenance. The attribution and Husak Collection
provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population

Howland Wood was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on May 13, 1877 and graduated from Brown University in 1900. Wood was in the photo engraving business in Boston. He held a number of positions with the American Numismatic Association including general secretary from 1905 to 1909. He was the associate editor of The Numismatist from 1909 to 1910. He moved to New York City in 1913 to work at the American Numismatic Society. While there, he served as associate editor and editor of the American Journal of Numismatics from 1910 to 1920. He edited the Numismatic Notes and Monographs after 1920 and served as the curator of the ANS museum from 1913 to 1938. He died in New York City on January 4, 1938.
